SONATRACH signs MoU with World Bank Group members to reduce methane emissions, develop green hydrogen

Algiers: Algeria’s state-owned energy company SONATRACH has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD) and the International Finance Corporation (IFC), members of the World Bank Group, to explore cooperation in reducing gas flaring and methane emissions and developing green hydrogen, Fuel Cells Works reported.

The agreement aims to identify and develop joint opportunities in areas related to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and accelerating the energy transition. It also covers the development of green hydrogen and its derivatives, along with cooperation in the petrochemicals and fertiliser industries.

The partnership will also explore opportunities to strengthen SONATRACH’s international expertise, particularly in African markets.

The MoU was signed following a ceremony held during a workshop on climate finance and carbon markets organised on November 3 and 4, 2026, at the International Conference Centre in Algiers.

The agreement provides for technical assistance, sharing of best practices, techno-economic studies, assessment of financing options and skill development.

SONATRACH will oversee the operational implementation of the agreement and coordinate activities undertaken under the partnership.
