German renewables developer PNE has announced plans to build a 1GW green hydrogen project in the province of Albacete, central Spain.
Its Spanish subsidiary Kolya-PNE estimates that the project will cost about €3bn.
According to local newspaper reports, the unnamed project has already secured land rights and water supply for the electrolyser in what is one of Spain’s most arid regions.
The project was officially presented to the Castilla-La Mancha region’s minister of sustainable development, Mercedes Gómez, last week.
Kolya-PNE is now consulting with the regional government and local city councils to jointly explore the next steps in the development of the project.
PNE has already developed more than 6.5GW of wind power projects in Europe, North America and South Africa, and in 2022 bought a majority stake in Spanish solar developer Kolya, which itself has 1.4GW of projects under its belt.
