Iceland Targets India Partnership For Geothermal, Carbon Capture, And Green Hydrogen

  • In an exclusive interview with StratNews Global, Iceland’s Minister of the Environment, Energy and Climate Jóhann Páll Jóhannsson outlined key areas for deeper energy cooperation with India, focusing on geothermal, carbon capture, and green hydrogen.
  • Icelandic mineralization pioneer Carbfix and regional cleantech firms are actively engaging Indian steel and industrial producers to deploy underground mineralization and CO2-to-methane utilization technologies.
  • The partnership leverages the India-EFTA Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement to pair Icelandic technological IP with India’s manufacturing scale and growing demand for industrial cooling and firm power.

Iceland is seeking to expand its clean energy and climate technology partnership with India, identifying geothermal energy, carbon capture and storage (CCS), and green hydrogen as primary avenues for bilateral cooperation, according to an exclusive report by StratNews Global.

Speaking to StratNews Global, Iceland’s Minister of the Environment, Energy and Climate Jóhann Páll Jóhannsson highlighted that India’s substantial geothermal potential remains largely untapped, offering opportunities for technology transfer in direct-use applications such as industrial cooling, district heating, and agricultural drying.

Beyond baseload power, Icelandic companies are targeting India’s hard-to-abate industrial sectors. Carbon mineralization firm Carbfix is actively engaging with Indian industrial players to evaluate in-situ underground carbon storage options, while other domestic technology firms are exploring projects to convert captured CO2 emissions from steel mills into synthetic methane.

The bilateral push is being accelerated under the framework of the India-EFTA Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement, which aims to facilitate cross-border project deployment and investment.

Scaling Icelandic IP Through Indian Industrial Capacity

The strategic alignment seeks to pair Iceland’s specialized subterranean and geothermal engineering expertise with India’s industrial scale, capital resources, and manufacturing capacity.

“India can create opportunities for us to scale up the technologies and know-how that we have already developed in our small country,” Jóhannsson told StratNews Global, emphasizing that domestic resource expansion initially grew out of energy security imperatives during the 1970s oil crises.

Iceland is also advancing next-generation deep-geothermal drilling techniques to access higher-temperature supercritical fluids, aimed at multiplying per-well power yields.

By integrating 24/7 geothermal energy and point-source carbon management into India’s heavy industrial base, both nations aim to de-risk supply chains and establish firm, non-intermittent alternatives to fossil fuel imports.
