Hyundai E&C Targets Water Electrolysis Technologies

Hyundai E&C is moving to enhance its global market competitiveness by securing core technologies for next-generation water electrolysis plants.

The Korean builder recently announced its participation in a national R&D initiative led by the Ministry of Climate, Energy and Environment.

The project, titled Front-End Engineering Design Technology Development for 100 MW-Class Overseas Water Electrolysis Plant, focuses on engineering design packages for large-scale green hydrogen production. By integrating system process design, operational configurations, artificial intelligence, and simulation models, the consortium aims to stabilize plant operations against fluctuations in renewable energy output.

Consortium:

Hyundai E&C serves as the lead contractor for the project. Other enterprises in the consortium include Hyundai Engineering, Hyundai Motor Company, Hanwha Global, Korea Midland Power, the Future Standards Research Institute, Seoul National University, and Korea University.

The initiative leverages Hyundai E&C’s operational expertise gained from existing projects, including the hydrogen production facility in Buan, Jeonbuk, and a 5 MW PEM water electrolysis system in Jeju.

“The results achieved through this R&D will serve as a key asset in strengthening our competitiveness in securing future water electrolysis projects in Korea and overseas,” stated a Hyundai E&C official. “The HMG Construction Technology Research Institute, which is carrying out this project, will consolidate Hyundai Motor Group’s core technological capabilities across the entire hydrogen value chain, from production and storage to transportation and utilization, to establish a Korean-style green hydrogen platform, while further solidifying its leading position in the next-generation water electrolysis hydrogen business.”

Clean energy strategy:

The clean energy transformation initiative is led by the HMG Construction Technology Research Institute, the consolidated R&D center for Hyundai E&C and Hyundai Engineering. The institute concentrates its technical strategy on four core growth engines: energy, future housing, smart construction, and infrastructure.

By integrating research functions across these disciplines, the group optimizes engineering synergies and speeds up the commercial deployment of advanced industrial assets.

Sectoral decarbonization:

To establish its position as a global energy player, the research institute is actively expanding project deployment and technology acquisition across critical zero-emission domains:

  • Green Hydrogen & Water Electrolysis: Developing 100 MW-scale front-end engineering design (FEED) packages, building on operational data from the Buan and Jeju PEM plants.
  • Small Modular Reactors (SMRs): Engineering compact, flexible nuclear power installations for stable baseload power.
  • Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) & Biogas: Scaled bio-refining and waste-to-energy processing solutions to decarbonize hard-to-abate transport sectors.
  • Offshore Wind Power: Structuring large-scale marine energy generation assets integrated with clean grid systems.

Through this multi-track strategy, Hyundai E&C builds end-to-end capabilities spanning energy generation, storage, transport, and utilization across the entire global clean energy value chain.
