
Alfa Laval will provide electrolyzer cooling equipment for the Onuba H₂ project, a major green hydrogen development at the La Rábida Energy Park in Huelva, Spain. With an initial electrolysis capacity of 300 MW and the potential to expand by an additional 105 MW, the facility is expected to produce 45,000 metric tons of green hydrogen annually. As the industrial cornerstone of the Andalusian Green Hydrogen Valley, the largest renewable hydrogen initiative in Spain and one of the most ambitious in Europe, Onuba is expected to play a key role in decarbonizing transportation and industrial operations.
Under the agreement, Alfa Laval will supply 60 heat exchangers to Spanish energy company Moeve for use in balance-of-plant cooling, electrolyzer cooling, and gas-cooling applications. The equipment is designed to maintain optimal operating temperatures throughout the hydrogen production process, supporting efficiency, reliability, and safe operation at industrial scale.
The Andalusian Green Hydrogen Valley has been designated a Project of Common Interest by the European Commission, providing access to public funding and support mechanisms intended to accelerate Europe’s energy transition and strengthen long-term energy security.
Renewable hydrogen is expected to be a critical component of the European Union’s decarbonization strategy, particularly for sectors that are difficult to electrify, including heavy transportation and energy-intensive industries. The Onuba project is intended to support those objectives by supplying low-carbon hydrogen while reducing dependence on fossil-based fuels.
Moeve reached a final investment decision on the Onuba H₂ project in March 2026. Backed by more than €1 billion in investment, the facility will be developed in partnership with Masdar and Enalter at Palos de la Frontera, Huelva. Once operational, it is expected to become the largest green hydrogen plant in Southern Europe, supplying renewable hydrogen for industrial applications and the production of low-carbon fuels.
The Onuba H₂ project represents a significant future market for hydrogen compression, storage, and distribution infrastructure. The project forms the first phase of the broader 2-GW Andalusian Green Hydrogen Valley, which is expected to produce up to 300,000 metric tons of green hydrogen annually. Supplying sectors including refining, chemicals, heavy transport, and sustainable fuels, the development underscores the increasing importance of reliable hydrogen compression technologies as large-scale projects move from planning into execution.
