PRESS RELEASE from Schneider
August 2025

Chile is making firm progress toward consolidating a new energy model based on clean energy sources, with green hydrogen emerging as one of the strategic pillars for achieving carbon neutrality. This energy transformation takes on particular relevance in a global context in which climate change—driven largely by the burning of fossil fuels—requires urgent and structural measures.

According to the Ministry of Energy’s 2022 report ” Green Hydrogen, a Country Project,” there are currently more than 70 green hydrogen projects in the pipeline, 15 of which have already announced operational start dates. Investment estimates are overwhelming: the sector is projected to mobilize US$45 billion by 2030, reaching a cumulative total of US$330 billion by 2050, equivalent to 130% of Chile’s 2021 GDP.

Furthermore, the value of annual production of green hydrogen and its derivatives is expected to reach US$33 billion by 2050, with US$24 billion earmarked for exports, consolidating the country as a leading player in global energy trade.

In this regard, Víctor Paredes, Director of Power Systems for Chile, Peru, and Bolivia at Schneider Electric, states that “green hydrogen allows us to decarbonize sectors that are more difficult to electrify, such as heavy transport or the high-temperature industry. Furthermore, it acts as a highly efficient and versatile energy storage system. It is the fuel of the future.”

The commitment to this energy source is also reflected internationally. According to Deloitte’s Global Green Hydrogen Outlook 2023 report, the green hydrogen economy is expected to grow rapidly in the coming decades. By 2030, global annual sales of US$642 billion and production of 170 million tons of hydrogen are projected. By 2050, estimates point to sales exceeding US$1.4 trillion and total production of 600 million tons, representing a 252% increase compared to the 2030 projection.

This growth demonstrates how green hydrogen is becoming a global economic driver and a central element of industrial decarbonization strategies. In line with these advances, Schneider Electric has taken an active role in Chile’s energy transition. The company has achieved carbon neutrality in its operations in the country, as well as promoting the exclusive use of renewable energy in its facilities and operating under circular economy and ESG (environmental, social, and corporate) governance principles.

Additionally, it participates in projects that enable the integration of non-conventional renewable energy sources (such as solar and wind) with energy storage systems, essential elements for ensuring a stable and reliable supply that enables the mass production of green hydrogen.

Added to this is an ecosystem of solutions that supports the integration of renewable energy throughout the value chain through an open data platform and AI-powered tools. These solutions enable safe, sustainable, and efficient green hydrogen operations and include process simulation, digital twins, specialized consulting, and energy and process architecture optimization. All of this facilitates real-time data collection, analysis, and control, helping companies achieve a competitive levelized cost of hydrogen (LCOH) and resilient operations.

“Efficient green hydrogen production requires a robust, digitalized, and resilient energy infrastructure. From smart grid management to real-time monitoring, technology plays a key role in scaling this new energy model,” Paredes adds.

The combination of unique natural conditions, political will, sustained investment, and technological innovation position Chile as a regional leader in the development of green hydrogen. “More than a trend, this energy source represents a strategic lever for diversifying the national economy, generating skilled jobs, and moving toward a more sustainable and inclusive development model,” concludes the company representative.
