A technical training workshop held at the Hydrogen Dune green hydrogen facility in Walvis Bay highlighted the growing importance of skills development and operational collaboration in Africa’s emerging hydrogen sector.
The hands on session brought together specialists from SMA Altenso, the Namibia Institute of Mining and Technology (NIMT) and operational teams working at the site. The workshop focused on preventive maintenance, knowledge sharing and strengthening technical cooperation across project partners.
The Hydrogen Dune plant, owned by CMB.TECH, is recognised as Africa’s first integrated green hydrogen production facility. The site combines solar PV generation, battery energy storage and hydrogen production technologies within a fully integrated system.

During the workshop, SMA Altenso outlined its role as a system integrator on the project. The company delivered and commissioned medium‑voltage power stations for the solar PV and battery energy storage systems and installed a 40‑foot rectifier system for solar‑based electrolysis.
The rectifier system, commissioned in September, now supports production of up to 90 kg of green hydrogen per hour. Hydrogen produced at the facility is supplied through a public refuelling station and a mobile refueller, enabling distribution to ports, industrial users and service stations across Namibia.
The plant is powered by a 6.5 hectare solar PV park and a 5.9 MW / 5 MWh battery energy storage system designed to support nighttime operations. An advanced energy management system developed by SMA Altenso optimises plant performance using solar generation forecasts and dynamic demand profiles.
The Hydrogen Dune facility also includes an integrated H2 Academy focused on hydrogen education, technical training and innovation, positioning the project as both a production hub and a platform for long term skills development in Namibia’s clean energy sector.
