
Turning promising hydrogen technology into a commercial business will be the central task for Jocelyne Moyer, the new president and CEO of Mississauga-based Next Hydrogen Solutions Inc. (NXH-X), as the company pursues opportunities in hydrogen fuelling and nuclear fusion.
Appointed to her roles in early September, Moyer has a background in mechanical engineering and has worked as a factory manager and consultant. After starting her career in manufacturing and operations for the food sector, Moyer worked as a consultant for Bain & Company before serving in senior positions in the renewable energy industry.
Now, Moyer has high hopes for Next Hydrogen. The company produces a line of electrolyzers that use electricity to split water into hydrogen and oxygen. The hydrogen can then be used as a low-carbon energy source, including as a replacement for fossil fuels in industrial and transportation applications, and in nuclear energy.
Moyer is “really excited” about Next Hydrogen’s journey, she said in an interview with Sustainable Biz Canada, citing its “incredible” research and development, being a homegrown Canadian company and her passion for elevating companies to commercialization.
Moyer’s background
One of Moyer’s first jobs was working for PepsiCo Foods Canada, where she was tasked with plant floor management, process improvement and supply chain optimization. She then switched career tracks to business consulting, earning an MBA from Harvard and spending over five years at Big Three consultancy Bain.
Following Bain, she worked for Toronto-based Heliolytics, which performed aerial inspections of photovoltaic systems and analytics. In 2023, Heliolytics was acquired by Zeitview, a U.S.-based developer of software for infrastructure, including renewable energy assets.
Moyer served as Zeitview’s senior vice-president of strategy and operations before departing to lead Next Hydrogen.
Her work at Heliolytics and Zeitview imparted knowledge in hardware and software development, scaling products to the real world and launching new products, Moyer said. It also taught her how to scale a business, she said: “finding the right way to grow, to make what you’re building repeatable, meeting customer needs, and then driving efficiencies.”
Commercializing Next Hydrogen
Moyer’s background dovetails with Next Hydrogen’s focus on commercialization, which she said is “definitely” her priority. Moyer’s consulting background is tailored to this work, she said, which entails scaling up the company and building a customer orientation and commercial operation.
One way to achieve this is to standardize its electrolyzer and ensure it can match customer needs. Moyer is confident Next Hydrogen has a reliable, efficient, unique product, but a “big focus is going to be finding the right customer fit for this,” and “making sure that’s what we’re focused on.”
Next Hydrogen hopes to show this with an undertaking in British Columbia. In August, the company announced it completed a basic design engineering package for a planned 10-megawatt hydrogen fuelling station in the province.
The project in British Columbia, which is Canada’s leader in early adoption of hydrogen fuel for medium- and heavy-duty vehicles, is a way to offer a “reliable, scalable, modular solution,” Moyer said.
She noted this would be Next Hydrogen’s largest project if finished. In 2025, the company started operations of its electrolyzer for clean hydrogen fuelling at a distribution centre in Ontario, designed to produce up to 650 kilograms of hydrogen per day to support fuel cell forklifts.
Next Hydrogen is also deeply engaged in the nuclear energy industry. This year, it announced an agreement with Fusion Fuel Cycles Inc. to demonstrate purpose-built electrolyzers for the fusion industry, and two contracts awarded by Fusion Fuel Cycles to showcase its electrolyzer for a “highly specialized nuclear fusion application.”
Next Hydrogen’s electrolyzer design is “very well suited” for fusion energy, Moyer said, adding that it is capable of reducing contamination risk, for example.
“We see fusion as an important, long-term market entering a critical phase.”
An ‘exciting year’ for Next Hydrogen
Moyer is optimistic about the hydrogen sector because energy independence and energy security are critical issues today, and she believes hydrogen can help address both problems.
An electrolyzer only requires electricity and water to output hydrogen, for example, which are relatively abundant in an industrialized economy and do not demand significant amounts of importing, unlike fossil fuels.
The International Energy Agency, in its 2026 review of the hydrogen industry, said electrolysis could help countries diversify sources of hydrogen from beyond coal and gas.
But the agency noted low-emissions hydrogen and hydrogen-based fuels are on the smaller scale today, with limited production and distribution capabilities. Additionally, low-carbon hydrogen production is forecast to be more expensive than fossil fuel-based hydrogen in most parts of the world.
Next Hydrogen has more to announce about its projects and the progress it has made toward commercialization, Moyer said.
“I think it’s going to be a really exciting year and beyond for us.”
