Montenegro wants concrete partnerships in the development of green hydrogen

Montenegro wants concrete partnerships in the development of green hydrogen and is ready to connect its institutions with international partners, and identify concrete opportunities for cooperation, announced Minister of Energy and Mining Admir Šahmanović.

“For countries like Montenegro, it is particularly important that international cooperation does not remain just about the exchange of policies and experiences. We want to translate it into concrete activities – connecting institutions and universities, joint research, knowledge exchange and the development of pilot and demonstration projects,” said Šahmanović at the Hydrogen Energy Ministerial Meeting in Japan.

He said that Montenegro has significant potential in renewable energy sources, especially hydropower, solar and wind energy, as a basis for the long-term development of green hydrogen.

“For Montenegro, which is still in the early stages of development of this area, it is particularly important to connect with countries and organizations that already have developed technologies, research capacities and practical experience in implementing hydrogen projects,” said Šahmanović at one of the leading international forums dedicated to the development of hydrogen technologies and their role in the energy transition.

He added that the adoption of the Green Hydrogen Development Program and the Action Plan for the period from now to 2028 has set the first strategic framework for the development of this area in Montenegro.

The ministerial meeting brought together representatives from a large number of countries in Europe and other parts of the world, as well as key international organizations and institutions in the field of hydrogen, including the International Energy Agency (IEA), the Hydrogen Council, and the International Partnership for Hydrogen and Fuel Cells in the Economy (IPHE).

The focus of the discussions was on the development of the hydrogen market, demand creation, cost reduction, infrastructure development and international supply chains, as well as the need for stronger cooperation to translate existing strategies and plans into concrete projects.

During the ministerial meeting, direct contacts were also made with representatives of IPHE and the Hydrogen Council, with whom it was agreed to continue communication in order to consider opportunities for concrete cooperation and stronger involvement of Montenegro in international initiatives in the field of hydrogen.

“The significant presence of European countries further confirmed the importance of hydrogen in the European energy transition and opened up space for connecting Montenegro with countries that are already developing concrete projects and regional initiatives in this area,” the statement said.

The Hydrogen Energy Ministerial Meeting has been held in Japan since 2018 as a platform to coordinate international efforts and strengthen cooperation in the development and application of hydrogen. This year’s edition was held on Thursday at Makuhari Messe.
