Clean hydrogen is one decarbonization option for energy-intensive companies such as refineries, steel makers and fertilizer producers that use fossil fuels in production methods to decarbonize by switching to a cleaner molecule. With green hydrogen using renewable electricity or blue hydrogen using natural gas with carbon capture and storage currently lacking enough major offtakers outside the refinery sector to spur economies of scale and cost reductions, there is growing interest in hydrogen that exists naturally, known as “natural “hydrogen” — and sometimes referred to as “geologic,” “gold” or “white” hydrogen. Just a few years ago, the sector was extremely small, with little exploration activity, but today there are exploration projects taking place around the world with high-profile and deep-pocketed investors taking a keen interest.
