The Mauritanian government and renewable energy developer CWP Global have agreed to advance the 1.2 million tonne per year (mtpa) AMAN green hydrogen project, targeting a final investment decision (FID) by 2030.
A new global convention creates contractual frameworks for the project located in northern Mauritania, which is currently undergoing front-end engineering design (FEED).
Ultimately planned to host 30GW of wind and solar renewable energy assets, AMAN is targeting an initial production capacity of 500,000 tonnes per year.
At full capacity, its 1.2mtpa of green hydrogen could produce 6.6mtpa of green ammonia for fertilisers and clean fuel, while potentially also going into domestic low-carbon direct reduced iron (DRI) production.
H.E. Mohamed Ould Khaled, Minister of Energy and Petroleum of Mauritania, called the convention a “major step toward achieving Mauritania’s ambition to become a global hub for renewable energy and green hydrogen.”
Mauritania’s high solar potential and strong winds give it good conditions to produce green hydrogen, while its location grants it convenient access to shipping routes towards consuming regions like the Americas and Europe.
European companies are eyeing large-scale green ammonia production in the country, with Möhring Energie planning a 100MW plant in Nouadhibou and Hynfra confirming its 100,000 tonne-per-year project last September.
