Lithuania’s First Green Hydrogen Production and Refuelling Station Inaugurated at Klaipėda Port - News and Statistics

Klaipeda Port has inaugurated Lithuania’s first green hydrogen production and refuelling station, according to a report from Container News. The facility represents a significant advancement in the country’s shift toward cleaner energy.

The station will provide green hydrogen for passenger cars, heavy trucks, ships, and port machinery. Its purpose is to foster a low-emission transport network in Lithuania.

Algis Latakas, Director General of Klaipeda Port Authority, noted that just a few years ago green hydrogen at the port was only an ambitious concept. He stated that the port is now opening the nation’s first such facility and helping to begin a new phase in Lithuania’s energy transition.

The port launched the project in 2023. Construction started in summer 2025, with main equipment arriving in October of that year. The facility produced its first green hydrogen in April 2026.

The station uses a polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) electrolyser for hydrogen production. At full capacity, it will generate roughly 127 tonnes of green hydrogen annually. Klaipeda Port Authority plans to use about 25% of the hydrogen for its own operations.

A hydrogen-powered waste collection vessel is expected to begin service at the port soon. The authority has also added a hydrogen-powered Toyota Mirai to its vehicle fleet. The port indicated that these investments show its commitment to testing and deploying clean technologies in real-world conditions.

The facility will operate as open infrastructure, serving the broader transport and logistics sector. Klaipeda Port Authority is collaborating with LTG Group, Klaipeda Stevedoring Company BEGA, and Volvo Lietuva to explore hydrogen use in road transport, rail operations, and port activities.

Commercial hydrogen supply is scheduled to start in autumn 2026. The project is part of the Next Generation Lithuania Economic Recovery and Resilience Plan and received funding from the European Union’s NextGenerationEU programme. The total investment in the station reached approximately EUR12 million, with the European Union contributing around EUR6 million. Companies Inzinerinis projektavimas, MT Group, and Gevalda delivered the project.
