Lhyfe explores green hydrogen supply to Dutch biomethanol plant | Hydrogen News

France’s Lhyfe could provide up to 12,000 tonnes of green hydrogen per year to Perpetual Next’s planned €1bn (£1.15bn) biomethanol plant in Delzijl, the Netherlands.

Under a new memorandum of understanding (MOU), the pair will evaluate Lhyfe supplying the 220,000 tonne per year biomethanol plant, which is yet to reach final investment decision (FID).

The hydrogen volumes would be used to increase production yields during pre-treatment of biomass-derived biogenic carbon feedstocks, at the project’s co-located DeltaTorr gasification plant to produce the biomethanol.

While a timeline for FID remains to be disclosed, Perpetual Next recently appointed Bilfinger as the project’s owner’s engineer in a move billed to advance toward the milestone.

Biomethanol is gaining traction as a decarbonisation pathway for shipping and the chemical industry.

Maritime operators, including Hapag-Lloyd, are exploring the molecule for commercial vessels, while it can also replace conventional methanol as a low-carbon feedstock for producing chemicals like formaldehyde, methylamines, and solvents.

Perpetual Next and Lhyfe highlighted a “significant industrial and chemical industry” located near the planned plant in Delzijl.

They also stressed green hydrogen demand as “set to grow” as EU industries pursue mandates for renewable fuel of non-biological origin (RFNBO) compliant hydrogen accounting for 42% of industrial hydrogen by 2030.

Lhyfe has steadily been building out its green hydrogen capacity this year, while securing offtake deals with H2Apex and Messer, as well as increasing its tube trailer delivery capacity.
