Kolkata: Jadavpur University (JU), in collaboration with three major public sector companies — Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC), Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) and Hindustan Urvarak & Rasayan Limited (HURL) — is set to establish a Centre of Excellence (CoE) for research and development in green hydrogen after its proposal received sanction from the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE).
The proposal is among four that were granted CoE status by the MNRE after a selection exercise involving proposals from academic institutes, research institutes and industries under the National Green Hydrogen Mission.
JU Vice-Chancellor Chiranjib Bhattacharya said the CoE will focus on the application of green hydrogen in the power, steel and fertiliser industries.
The research under the project will focus on four areas — co-firing of hydrogen and fossil fuels in power plant boilers, efficient compression of hydrogen for different applications, hydrogen-metal interaction for storage and transportation, and the introduction of hydrogen in blast furnaces for steel making, Bhattacharya said.
The total budget for the project is Rs 8.18 crore, to be contributed equally by MNRE and DVC. “JU will be the knowledge partner and will primarily participate in research. SAIL and HURL will participate in applying the technology in their facilities,” Bhattacharya said. The CoE will be inaugurated on September 30 at the Technology Bhavan on the JU campus.
The National Green Hydrogen Mission aims to make India a global hub for the production, use and export of green hydrogen, with the objective of making the country self-reliant in the energy sector.
