Intercontinental Energy's Modular Hydrogen System Gains Funding & First License - News and Statistics

Intercontinental Energy has reported progress on a standardized system architecture for large-scale green hydrogen production, according to a report from pv magazine Australia. The company has secured federal government funding of up to 1.6 million Australian dollars to develop a digital twin for its power-to-hydrogen node system.

The Perth-based firm also signed an initial license for this modular architecture, which will be deployed for a large-scale renewable hydrogen project that was not named. A company executive stated this first license marks a shift from concept to deployment and is expected to serve as a model for future agreements with global developers.

The patented node system is designed to integrate hydrogen production directly with large solar and wind generation, aiming to reduce costs and improve efficiency by avoiding long-distance power transmission. Company estimates indicate the architecture could lower capital expenditure and increase operational efficiency by up to 10% each compared to conventional models.

The funding from the Australian Renewable Energy Agency will support the creation of a Digital Twin Optimisation Framework. This tool is intended to help developers plan large-scale green fuel hubs with greater certainty regarding cost, performance, and project timelines.

The system architecture is planned as the foundation for the proposed Western Green Energy Hub in southwest Western Australia. That project envisions up to 70 gigawatts of generation capacity to produce millions of tonnes of green hydrogen annually. The developer recently reported securing sufficient green ammonia offtake interest from customers in Japan and Korea to support an initial stage targeting production by 2033, with full capacity planned for 2050.

Additionally, a feasibility phase agreement has been signed with a Chinese heavy equipment manufacturer and South Korean entities to advance the first stage of that hub. Intercontinental Energy is also developing another large solar, wind, and green hydrogen project in Western Australia’s Pilbara region.
