Indian hydrogen | Green tech firm inks ‘binding’ deal to build million-tonne ammonia plant at Tata Steel complex

Indian green technology firm Hygenco Green Energies has signed a “binding” deal to build a massive 1.1 million tonnes green ammonia plant in India’s eastern state of Odisha, as part of the company’s plans to invest $2.5bn in renewable H2 projects in the country over the next three years.

Hygenco plans to export most of the green ammonia from the plant, and says it is in “advanced discussions” with multiple offtakers to this end.

The developer inked a memorandum of understanding (MoU) — which it claimed is binding — yesterday (Tuesday) with the Tata Steel Special Economic Zone, a subsidiary of the Tata Steel group which is developing a giant 3,000 acre (around 12 square km) industrial park in the city of Gopalpur.

The 1.1-million-tonnes-per-annum green ammonia plant would be developed in multiple stages, with the first phase scheduled for commissioning in December 2026.

The Golpalpur Industrial Park (GIP), which is positioning itself as a green hydrogen and ammonia hub, has been granted Special Economic Zone (SEZ) status by the Indian authorities, allowing businesses there to take advantage of lower tariffs and its own bespoke tax regime.

Hygenco’s ammonia project was in February cleared by the government of Odisha to operate within the boundary of the SEZ.

Earlier this year, the company commissioned a “megawatt-scale” 75 tonnes-per-year green hydrogen project at a steelworks in Hisar in northern India, which it claimed is the country’s first commercial-scale green H2 scheme.

“Having already demonstrated our mettle in the space of green hydrogen by commissioning India’s first green hydrogen project earlier this year, we will extend application of our superior technology to this project thereby producing lowest cost green ammonia for our clients,” said Hygenco CEO Amit Bansal.

“In line with our strategic vision of being a dominant player in this sector worldwide, the produce from this plant, in the initial phase, will be predominantly exported for which advanced discussions with various offtakers are already taking place.”
