IMI supplies 1MW PEM electrolyzer for Italy’s green hydrogen initiative

IMI reported Sept. 23 that it’s won a contract with Polytec Energy Srl to supply a 1-megawatt (MW), proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzer for its H2 Polytec project in Storo, Italy.

The project was among the winners of a challenge issued by Trento autonomous province for building a green hydrogen production plant in disused industrial areas. This content is part of “Mission 2—Green revolution and ecological transition,” which is a division of Italy’s ongoing National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR).

Promoted by Polytec and its parent company, Polytec Spa, IMI’s electrolyzer will test green hydrogen production techniques. The unit will be powered by a dedicated, renewable supply of photovoltaic (PV) systems at a total installed capacity of 4.4 MWp. The hydrogen produced will be used at industrial sites across the Storo region, specifically the Ex-Paisoli area, where end users will use it for painting and drying processes, as well as in metalworking furnaces.

“This project represents a concrete step towards the decarbonizing industry and regenerating brownfield sites, especially Ex-Paisoli in Storo,” says Alessandro Lauria, sales director at IMI. “Installating our PV-powered, PEM electrolyzer shows how technology can be environmentally friendly, while also enabling us to regenerate industrial areas.”

Mattia Rosa, project manager at Polytec Energy, added, “The project is running smoothly and on schedule. With the funding obtained and the addition of a direct investment that we chose to add, the green hydrogen Polytec produces will contribute to the industrial area’s energy transition. We hope to see the project’s wider benefits in the local area, bringing increased employment and enabling development of new skills.”
