Builder looks to secure lead in winning future orders through state project

Hyundai Engineering & Construction is joining a government-backed project to develop a package design for large-scale water electrolysis plants, seeking to strengthen its foothold in the green hydrogen market.

According to Hyundai E&C on Friday, the builder will participate in a research and development project led by the Ministry of Climate, Energy and Environment to to draw up the system, process design and operational structure required for water electrolysis plants with capacities of 100 megawatts or more

The project comes as maximizing the use of renewable energy, standardizing large-scale plants and optimizing systems emerge as key challenges in the water electrolysis market.

Hyundai E&C aims to use the project to build expertise in integrating large-scale hydrogen production systems with renewable energy while strengthening its ability to respond to changes in the market.

For the state-project, Hyundai E&C will lead a consortium comprising Hyundai Engineering, Hyundai Motor, Hanwha Global, Korea Midland Power, Future Standard Research Institute, Seoul National University and Korea University. Hyundai E&C will be responsible for developing the basic design package and conducting an economic feasibility assessment.

The company plans to incorporate artificial intelligence and dynamic simulation models into the project to address fluctuations in renewable energy output while improving the stability and reliability of plant operations.

Hyundai E&C has accumulated experience in hydrogen-related projects, including the construction of a hydrogen production base in Buan, North Jeolla Province, and the development of a 5MW plant-based proton exchange membrane water electrolysis system in Jeju.

“The results obtained through research and development will become a key asset in enhancing our competitiveness in winning water electrolysis projects at home and abroad,” a Hyundai E&C official said.

“The HMG Construction Technology Research Institute, which is carrying out this project, will bring together the Hyundai Motor Group’s core technological capabilities spanning hydrogen production, storage and transportation, and utilization to establish a Korean-style green hydrogen platform while further solidifying its leading position in next-generation water electrolysis hydrogen businesses.”

The HMG Construction Technology Research Institute is an integrated R&D organization of Hyundai E&C and Hyundai Engineering. It focuses on creating synergies in research and development across four core areas: energy, future housing, smart construction and infrastructure.
