Hydrogen-related developments account for nearly one-third of projects selected for investment under the European Commission’s new €3.4bn ($3.8bn) Innovation Fund round.
Among the 77 projects selected were 23 hydrogen-related developments spanning electrolytic hydrogen production, ammonia cracking, hydrogen-derived fuels and chemicals, hydrogen-based iron reduction, and supporting technologies.
The fund reinvests revenues from the EU’s emissions trading system into clean energy projects. Precise funding that each project could receive has not yet been disclosed.
Featured in the selection is GravitHy’s planned hydrogen-based iron production facility in Fos-sur-Mer, France, targeting two million tonnes of hot briquetted iron annually.
Also included are RWE’s 20MW HyScore green hydrogen demonstration project in Germany, H2Site’s 20 tonne-per-day ammonia-to-hydrogen facility in the Netherlands, and Hy2Gen’s H4 Marseille Fos, which aims to produce 75,000 tonnes of green hydrogen-based sustainable aviation fuel by 2032.
Chosen initiatives will now undergo grant agreement procedures with the European Climate, Infrastructure and Environmental Executive Agency, with funding results expected to be announced early next year.
Total funding has risen slightly from last year’s €2.9bn ($3.3bn) but still lags behind 2024’s €4.8bn ($5.3bn) funding push, which also saw the hydrogen space win big.
That year, six clean hydrogen projects and eight electrolyser manufacturers received backing.
