The US Department of Energy (DOE) has outlined plans to make up to $60m available for alternative fuel and chemical technologies, including pilot projects for hydrogen blending in existing natural gas networks.
Granted through the DOE’s Alternative Fuels and Feedstocks Office (AFFO), the funding could develop projects using existing infrastructure to expand energy production.
Projects involving biomass-derived chemicals and alternative refining chemicals will also be eligible for a portion of the cash.
DOE said suitable hydrogen blending pilots would improve the “reliability, scalability, suitability, performance and durability of distribution networks.”
The funding opportunity is expected to be formally advertised in November this year.
It comes in contrast to the Trump administration’s previous actions around hydrogen.
During the first year of Trump’s second term, the DEO axed $2.2bn in funding for large-scale hydrogen hubs in western US states amid $7.5bn in wider cuts, largely to Democrat-leaning states.
