Germany has opened its third funding call for early-stage international green hydrogen and derivative projects.
The Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWI) said German companies could submit project proposals to secure up to €30m ($34.2m) for projects outside the European Economic Area and Switzerland.
The funds will be used for project feasibility studies being undertaken by German technology suppliers and project developers. However, BMWI said the allocated funding is still subject to the government adopting its 2027 budget.
Submissions are open until 17 December. “Promising” projects will be invited to submit a full application before grants are awarded in the second half of 2027.
Winners from previous rounds span Chile, Namibia, Ukraine, Saudi Arabia, and Serbia, including HIF Global’s operational Haru Oni green hydrogen-based e-fuel plant.
Germany has been increasing its support for overseas projects as it seeks to line up future supplies of green hydrogen amid high costs for domestic production.
In a survey carried out by gas and hydrogen transmission system operators, the country’s prospective electrolyser pipeline for 2035 has shrunk by two-thirds.
The government also recently awarded €1.3bn ($1.48bn) to three Danish projects for pipeline supply to Germany.
Industry groups have warned the country’s focus on hydrogen imports should not come at the expense of domestic production.
