GeoPura to offtake green hydrogen from 35MW UK-backed project | Hydrogen

Hydrogen generator firm GeoPura will offtake green hydrogen from a 35MW UK government-subsidised project being developed by Jo Bamford’s Hygen.

GeoPura will take 15% (2.25 tonnes) of Hygen’s Bradford Low Carbon Hydrogen’s 15 tonnes per day output in the first year of the deal, before receiving three tonnes daily (20%) in the second year.

The Bradford project, which has secured a 15-year government-backed hydrogen subsidy agreement under the UK’s first Hydrogen Allocation Round (HAR 1), is expected to begin production in 2028.

Despite securing government support and now multiple offtakers, the project has yet to reach final investment decision.

Recently acquired by Canadian fuel cell firm Ballard, GeoPura manufactures and leases hydrogen generators, which are fuelled partly by its own hydrogen production, including output from its HAR 1-backed HyMarnham project, in which it holds a 50% stake.

Ballard President and former GeoPura CEO, Andy Cunningham, said the deal secured an additional “long-term” supply of fuel for its generator fleet.

“This agreement helps us build that confidence, connecting UK-produced green hydrogen with projects that need dependable electricity and giving us a stronger foundation to scale,” he said.

Hygen is part of the HydraB group, which is owned by Jo Bamford – the son of JCB’s owner Lord Anthony Bamford.

The developer said GeoPura joined JCB and other HydraB portfolio companies, Wrightbus and Ryze Power, as offtakers.

The agreement comes amid wider delays to the UK’s hydrogen production rollout, with several projects backed under HAR 1 yet to reach FID, despite initially being expected to begin operations by the end of 2026.

Meanwhile, the government has acknowledged delays to its second HAR, with successful projects still awaiting final contract awards more than two years after applications closed.
