Four green hydrogen projects in Egypt, Morocco, Namibia, and South Africa will receive a portion of $20m in African Development Bank (AfDB) funds.
The reimbursable funds, awarded under AfDB’s African Green Hydrogen Programme, will target early-stage activities, aiming to help projects reach final investment decisions (FID).
Project Ra, a green ammonia facility planned in Egypt by Germany’s DAI Infrastruktur, with a projected ammonia capacity of two million tonnes per annum (mtpa), secured $3.55m.
Narveva Holding’s Guelmim Green Hydrogen Valley in Morocco, an early-stage project with few publicly available details, will receive $5.28m.
Hyphen Hydrogen’s $10bn green hydrogen project in Namibia, which targets a first phase with 1.5GW of electrolysis and received $10m from AfDB in 2025, was awarded a further $5.93m.
Enertrag and ArcelorMittal’s Saldanha hydrogen-based direct reduced iron (DRI) project in South Africa, which was recently named among the country’s “first wave” of government-backed projects, secured $5.24m from AfDB.
With the four projects’ combined total investment value presented as $23bn, the funds represent a relatively minor funding boost.
The winners were selected out of 81 proposals coming from 18 African countries.
Africa’s green hydrogen outlook remains nascent. However, it continues to see interest and activity, with developers seeking to capitalise on areas of high solar and wind energy potential and established logistical links.
Last week saw the Mauritanian government agree to advance a mammoth green hydrogen and ammonia project alongside renewables developer CWP Global.
In August, global engineering firm KBR was confirmed to undertake early engineering studies for a 900MW US-backed green ammonia project in Laayoune, Morocco.
