European Energy wins German hydrogen support – reNews

European Energy has secured support under Germany’s hydrogen auction framework linked to the European Hydrogen Bank for plans to add 150MW of hydrogen production capacity in Denmark.

The company said funding of up to €228m will support additional hydrogen production connected to its Kassø site (pictured).

European Energy added that it was one of three selected projects under the German government scheme, which forms part of Germany’s strategy to accelerate renewable hydrogen and hydrogen derivative development and imports.

The company said the award reflects growing demand for renewable hydrogen and hydrogen-based products, including e-methanol.

“We are very pleased with this support awarded by the German Government,” said Rene Alcaraz Frederiksen, EVP and head of PTX at European Energy.

“The support enables further expansion of hydrogen production connected to Kassø and contributes to strengthening Europe’s renewable fuels infrastructure.”

European Energy said it expects the planned hydrogen pipeline between Denmark and Germany to move forward as producers and off-takers demonstrate commitment to the market.

“We among others are dedicated to moving forward the green hydrogen industry in Denmark, and we now call on the incoming Danish Government to commit to constructing the hydrogen infrastructure that will transport our products to off-takers in Germany,” said Frederiksen.

European Energy said Germany’s requirements for road fuels certified as RFNBO are helping drive interest in renewable hydrogen and hydrogen-based products.

“By financing hydrogen production in Denmark but also by implementing ambitious targets for uptake of green fuels, Germany is leading the way in Europe.”

“We call on the Danish government to step up and follow the German example to make sure that green hydrogen can finally play a crucial role in the green transition.”

European Energy operates a green hydrogen production facility in Esbjerg and, together with Mitsui & Co. Ltd., owns the Kassø e-methanol facility.
