ENBW expands German hydrogen demo site to 6MW of electrolysis | Hydrogen News

A 5MW PEM electrolyser has been installed at Energie Baden-Württemberg’s (ENBW) hydrogen demonstration facility, adding to an operational 1MW alkaline system.

Due online by 2027, the new Plug Power system will join its 2019-launched predecessor in drawing power from a nearby hydroelectric power plant.

Located in the municipality of Grenzach-Wyhlen, southern Germany, the two units will be operated by Germany-Swiss energy utility naturenergie hochrhein and will supply hydrogen for refuelling and tube trailer deliveries.

While a hydrogen output capacity was not identified, the site will feature storage for around five tonnes.

The €40m ($44.8m) project has seen around €15m ($16.8m) in funding from Germany’s Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWE).

Hydropower is viewed as offering a strong platform for green hydrogen production, often supplying a more stable output than wind and solar energy assets.

Atome’s 110MW Viletta green hydrogen-based fertiliser plant in Paraguay had planned to use 145MW of hydropower to produce 260,000 tonnes of calcium ammonium nitrate per year.

Policy changes have, however, resulted in a long-running dispute over the facility’s power supply.
