Czechia has moved cautiously into the commercial phase of green hydrogen, as a newly launched project in Napajedla demonstrates the country’s potential in this sector. The nation’s inaugural electrolyser for zero-emission hydrogen has been completed and is set to serve both domestic industry and transportation. Hydrogen produced in an environmentally friendly manner is expected to be a significant factor in reducing carbon emissions across Czech industry and the broader economy.
Solar Global inaugurated the electrolyser on Monday in Napajedla, located in the Zlin region, establishing the company as a trailblazer for this technology within Czechia. The device generates hydrogen using solar energy and, in part, wind power. As a prominent local manufacturer of photovoltaic plants, Solar Global relies on panels mounted on its headquarters’ roof and wall, along with a wind turbine, to create the green hydrogen.
Green hydrogen is defined as hydrogen generated through water electrolysis powered by renewable electricity. Equipped with battery storage, the Napajedla electrolyser is set to yield 8,000 kilograms of zero-emission hydrogen each year. The company estimates that this volume would enable a hydrogen fuel-cell passenger vehicle, like those currently made by Toyota or Hyundai, to cover 800,000 kilometres, or allow a hydrogen bus to travel 80,000 kilometres.
Even though the green hydrogen market is still nascent, Solar Global owner Vitezslav Skopal notes that it is in demand from firms with decarbonisation goals seeking to substitute fossil fuels. Skopal also anticipates that hydrogen buses will eventually refuel at his facility. He points out that while cities show interest, they will not purchase them without refuelling options, and a station for passenger cars and trucks is planned for the site within two years.
Solar Global’s main aim, however, is to utilise green hydrogen for energy storage. The linked pressurised tank can contain 400 kilograms of the gas, comparable to a large battery storage system with 13 MWh capacity. The annual potential for storing photovoltaic energy totals 246 MWh. Beyond hydrogen, the electrolyser will generate zero-emission oxygen suitable for industry, food processing, or healthcare.
The company funded the 35 million koruna investment partly via a bank loan, with nine million provided by a grant. Skopal indicates that payback is not yet in sight, given the technology’s early stage and the emerging market. He believes the payback situation is not perfect now, but it will improve over time. Someone has to take the first step, he adds, expressing hope that the project will teach them green hydrogen production and yield a future competitive edge.
He also mentions that the company is developing another initiative in Kolin, aiming to construct a 9 MW photovoltaic plant to power a one MW electrolyser, which would be four times the size of the Napajedla project.
Hydrogen is poised to be crucial for decarbonising Czech energy and the economy. In addition to offering long-term storage for clean energy, it is intended to help supplant some imported fossil fuels and reduce emissions in industrial areas that are hard to electrify and where cutting the carbon footprint is challenging.
Martin Sedlak, Programme Director at the Modern Energy Association, explains that this mainly applies to the chemical and metallurgical sectors, as well as heavy freight transport. He observes that previously, this future fuel was only made in Czechia through small pilot efforts, but the Napajedla energy complex shows it can be produced on an industrial scale domestically.
Environment Minister Petr Hladik states that the recently approved Czech National Energy and Climate Plan targets about 30,000 tonnes of green hydrogen produced locally by 2030, with a comparable amount imported. Still, this would account for just a small fraction of the Czech energy mix. Hladik adds that additional similar projects are in the works in Czechia, and projections suggest green hydrogen will supplant natural gas between 2030 and 2040, with substantial expansion in industry and transport.
The European Union aims to generate ten million tonnes of green hydrogen by 2030 and bring in another ten million tonnes, as part of its goal to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 55 percent by 2030.
