Austria's Largest Green Hydrogen Plant: 12.5 MW Facility Breaks Ground - News and Statistics

ANDRITZ AG, based in Graz, Austria, and RAG Austria AG, headquartered in Vienna, have held a groundbreaking ceremony to initiate construction of the nation’s largest green hydrogen production site.

This 12.5 MW installation is intended to capture excess renewable electricity generated during summer months and store it for times of elevated energy consumption, especially winter, thereby boosting energy security, fostering further renewable energy growth, and offering green hydrogen to industrial users.

ANDRITZ is undertaking the project on an EPC basis, assuming complete oversight of execution and startup. The facility is slated to commence operations by late 2026, generating roughly 17 million cubic meters (over 1,500 metric tons) of green hydrogen each year, with solar power as its main renewable input. Once operational, it will rank as Austria’s largest green hydrogen plant.

This initiative tackles a key hurdle in the energy shift: capturing renewable power when it is plentiful and making it available during peak demand, while also delivering a steady, domestic supply of green hydrogen for industry. By transforming surplus summer solar energy into green hydrogen, the plant allows RAG Austria to establish large-scale seasonal storage, enabling renewable energy to be used for electricity and heat generation in winter.

Markus Mitteregger, CEO of RAG Austria, stated that given the growing need for green hydrogen in industry, heating, and power generation—particularly in winter—Europe must start producing its own hydrogen and systematically utilize available surplus electricity. He noted that roughly half of future demand will have to be sourced within Europe, making immediate action essential.

ANDRITZ’s delivery includes the full green hydrogen production facility along with hydrogen purification and compression equipment. This venture reinforces ANDRITZ’s role as a premier EPC contractor for green hydrogen projects and aligns with its strategic emphasis on technologies driving the green transition.
