Adhesive products manufacturer Tesa has committed to buying 500 tonnes of green hydrogen per year from EWE’s 320MW Emden project, with deliveries expected to begin in 2028.
It comes as the second public offtake agreement from the plant, which is due online next year.
The hydrogen is set to be delivered to Tesa’s Hamburg factory by pipeline to fuel two dual-fuel steam boilers used in its manufacturing processes.
Neither EWE nor Tesa confirmed the length of the supply contract.
Tesa intends to establish a pipeline connection between the plant and Germany’s wider hydrogen backbone by the end of 2027, using funding from regional government and Germany’s Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWE).
The deal follows steelmaker Salzgitter securing the first offtake from the Emden plant in a 10,000 tonne per year deal supplying its direct reduced iron project.
Tesa’s offtake comes despite Germany not yet having transposed into law the Renewable Energy Directive III requirement for green hydrogen to account for 42% of industrial hydrogen by 2030.
A recently leaked BMWE document saw the ministry claiming the existing RED III RFNBO sector-specific mandates are too complex, making them difficult to implement.
It called for cross-sector objectives to be imposed in their place.
