India secures the world’s largest green hydrogen export orders as Japan, Germany and South Korea back billions in clean energy deals.

India Lands World’s Largest Green Hydrogen Orders as Japan, Germany and Korea Line Up

India has achieved a major milestone in the green energy sector, with Indian companies signing the world’s largest green hydrogen offtake commitments, totalling 5,55,610 metric tonnes per annum (MTPA). This positions India as a global leader in green hydrogen supply commitments.

Key Highlights

  • 23 offtake contracts have been signed since the launch of the National Green Hydrogen Mission in 2023.
  • 18 agreements were signed in 2026 alone, covering more than 4 lakh MTPA of green hydrogen equivalent supply.
  • More than 70% of the contracted volume is earmarked for exports, primarily to Japan, Germany and South Korea.
  • The projects are expected to attract around ₹90,000 crore (US$9.5 billion) in investment.

Major International Deals

  • Reliance Industries signed a long-term green ammonia supply agreement worth over US$3 billion with Samsung C&T of South Korea, with deliveries expected from 2028.
  • AM Green secured a long-term agreement to supply green ammonia to Germany through the H2Global mechanism.
  • ACME Group signed a deal to supply 4,88,000 MTPA of green ammonia to Japan’s IHI Corporation, along with a separate green methanol supply agreement with Mitsubishi Gas Chemical.
  • L&T and ITOCHU formed a joint venture to supply 3,00,000 tonnes of green ammonia annually to Japan.

Why It Matters

Green hydrogen projects typically require firm purchase commitments before financing can be secured. These signed offtake agreements provide the demand certainty required for project financing, making India one of the few countries with a large bankable pipeline of green hydrogen exports.

The commitments already account for roughly 11% of India’s target to produce 5 million metric tonnes of green hydrogen annually by 2030 under the National Green Hydrogen Mission.

Bottom Line: India is rapidly emerging as a global green hydrogen export hub, with Japan, Germany and South Korea becoming major future buyers and billions of dollars in investment expected to flow into the sector.
