Charbone adds hydrogen, helium filling capacity at Sorel-Tracy | Helium

Canadian industrial gas firm Charbone has added cylinder filling capacity to its Sorel-Tracy green hydrogen plant in Quebec as it expands the facility into a multi-gas distribution hub.

The unit will fill hydrogen and helium cylinders on-site for supply to customers across the region, bringing a previously outsourced stage of the firm’s gas supply chain under its direct control.

While the company has not disclosed the new unit’s capacity or cost, it extends the role of Sorel-Tray beyond green hydrogen production, positioning the facility as a broader industrial gas supply and distribution hub.

Charbone said the expanded offering will target industrial and commercial customers, independent gas distributors, and institutional buyers.

“By handling the filling of helium cylinders ourselves, and later industrial gases and speciality mixtures, we are expanding our offering and opening up new opportunities to grow revenue with a diverse clientele,” said CEO David Gagnon.

It follows the firm expanded its helium tube trailer fleet from one to five, after adding 22 new helium customers across Quebec.

The announcement comes amid ongoing development of the site’s Phase 1B hydrogen production expansion. In August, the company received the additional electrolyser to take the plant’s capacity to 4.75MW. The new system is due online this autumn.

Charbone is targeting six to eight regional supply hubs across North America, with Sorel-Tracy serving as an anchor of its hydrogen, helium, and specialty gases distribution network.
