Metacon awarded EU funding for Greek biogas-to-hydrogen initiatives | Hydrogen News

Swedish hydrogen technology firm Metacon has secured €430,000 ($480,000) in EU grant funding for two biogas-to-hydrogen projects in Greece.

The firm’s Greek subsidiary landed €242,000 ($270,500) in funding for its BioH2Vap project, which focuses on reforming-based hydrogen generation, and €188,000 ($120,000) for the PureHy2+ project, which will produce hydrogen from biogas.

BioH2Vap aims to establish a pilot plant in Crete for validating Metacon’s biogas upgrading, biomethane production, and hydrogen generation technology.

The EU grant covers the majority of the three-year project’s expected €302,400 ($338,000) budget.

PureHy2+ will see Metacon, alongside consortium partners including Biogas Lagkada, develop an integrated system enabling biogas facilities to produce renewable hydrogen while capturing carbon dioxide on site.

The public funding will cover 80% of Metacon’s €235,000 share of the three-year project.

Metacon’s portfolio of hydrogen technologies includes PEM and alkaline electrolysers, hydrogen reforming units, storage tanks, and compression and dispensing equipment.

In September, the company brought 50MW of Chinese pressurised alkaline electrolyser stacks from Peric Hydrogen Technologies to the European market, integrating them into their own systems.

The company is already supplying 50MW of Peric-based alkaline electrolysers to MotorOil Hellas’ Cornith refinery in Greece.
