Turn2X delivers hydrogen-based e-methane from Spanish plant | Hydrogen News

Commodity trading firm STX Group has received the first volumes of green hydrogen-based e-methane under an offtake deal with German start-up Turn2X.

Undisclosed volumes of the renewable fuel of non-biological origin (RFNBO) compliant fuel were delivered from Turn2X’s inaugural commercial plant in Spain under an agreement covering an unknown period and total volume.

H2 View has reached out for information on the deal, which STX said expands its renewable gas portfolio.

E-methane is chemically identical to methane but is produced by combining green hydrogen with biogenic carbon dioxide (CO2).

Its end-uses span maritime and shipping fuels, heavy industrial heat appliances, and commercial and domestic utilities.

Turn2X secured biogenic CO2 used in the gas in a March deal with AGR Biogas.

RFNBO compliance also requires the hydrogen used to be generated with qualifying renewable electricity from new generation capacity, sourced within the same bidding zone, and matched to operation monthly until the end of 2029 and on an hourly basis from 2030.

The gas has recently received increased attention.

Qualifying e-methane is eligible to meet transport quotas under the Renewable Energy Directive III.

In July, Finnish developer Ren-Gas signed a €1bn ($1.1bn) supply deal with Swiss liquefied natural gas operator Avanca Energy for distribution to trucking operators via existing gas infrastructure.

Last week, UK-based start-up Rivan Industries launched a new 50MW factory for its 1MW modular e-methane production systems.
