Japanese energy company ENEOS has officially opened a $200 million green hydrogen demonstration facility at Bulwer Island in Brisbane, with the project expected to support more than 100 specialist jobs in Queensland over its lifetime.

According to the Queensland Government, the facility follows a 2024 trade mission to Japan by the Crisafulli Government and brings together Japanese technology and Queensland expertise to test the production and transportation of green hydrogen for international markets.

The facility uses a liquid carrier to store and transport hydrogen at normal temperature and pressure, with a portion of the production intended for Japan.

Queensland Minister for Finance, Trade, Employment and Training Ros Bates said the opening highlighted the importance of direct engagement with international investors.

“When I met ENEOS in Japan in December 2024, we announced this investment in Queensland and now we’ve opened the facility in Brisbane,” Bates said.

Bates said the government’s trade engagement aimed to strengthen Queensland’s relationships with international partners and support investment in the state.

“Under our Government, Queensland is open for business and stands ready to work with investors to drive sustainable economic opportunities for the future,” she said.

The Queensland Government said the project would create opportunities for local businesses and workers, while supporting efforts to establish Queensland as a destination for international investment in emerging energy technologies.
