Poland – TAURON H2 and PKM Tychy want to cooperate to develop hydrogen-powered public transport

TAURON H2 and the Tychy Municipal Transport Company have signed a letter of intent expressing their willingness to cooperate in developing a hydrogen economy. The document addresses the potential use of renewable hydrogen, including RFNBO hydrogen, for the development of low-emission public transport in Tychy (Silesian Voivodeship).

The signing of the letter is in line with the TAURON Group’s activities related to energy transformation and the development of new business areas related to renewable energy sources.

Renewable hydrogen is another renewable energy value chain being developed within the TAURON Group, enabling the use of renewable energy not only in the power sector but also in transport and industry. This enables the creation of new products and services that support the decarbonization of the economy while simultaneously increasing the flexibility of the entire energy system. The development of hydrogen projects is a response to the growing market demand for emission-free energy carriers and a key element in building the TAURON Group’s long-term competitive advantage in a transforming economy.

The letter of intent confirms the readiness of both parties to continue dialogue and exchange experiences related to the use of hydrogen in public transport and the development of the hydrogen economy.

Marek Pinkas, Vice President of the Management Board of TAURON H2, emphasizes:

The center of the Silesian Voivodeship is one of the most urbanized and industrialized regions in Poland, with a population of over 4 million.

”It is also an area with a very extensive public transport network and high heavy transport traffic, as it is located at the intersection of two European TEN-T corridors: the Baltic-Adriatic and the North Sea-Baltic. These conditions create a natural setting for the development of a hydrogen economy. We appreciate the opportunity to collaborate with PKM Tychy, which is already gaining experience in operating hydrogen buses. We also count on broader involvement of local governments and businesses in the region, because only together can we create a coherent hydrogen ecosystem, combining the production, distribution, and use of green hydrogen in transport and industry,”

The growing importance of hydrogen in public transport is also evidenced by the actions already undertaken by PKM Tychy.

Maciej Gramatyka, Mayor of Tychy, says,

PKM Tychy is one of the largest urban transport operators in the Silesian region, providing transport services based on modern and constantly modernized rolling stock and managing transport infrastructure of strategic importance to the metropolitan area.

”The carrier currently operates five hydrogen buses in regular scheduled service, gaining experience in using hydrogen technology in everyday services for residents. At the same time, the company is developing technical resources dedicated to operating hydrogen-powered buses, which confirms its long-term approach to the development of zero-emission transport and creates the potential to further increase the number of hydrogen vehicles in the future,”

TAURON H2 is developing projects related to the production and use of RFNBO hydrogen as a key element supporting the energy transition and the decarbonization of transport and industry. The company’s key undertaking is the HP-HRS project, which involves the construction of a 20 MW electrolyzer at the Jaworzno III Power Plant, along with the necessary supporting infrastructure. In September 2025, TAURON H2 signed an agreement with Bank Gospodarstwa Krajowego (BGK) for project funding in the form of a non-repayable grant from the National Power Plant (KPO) for nearly PLN 128 million. The project is entering the final planning phase – the company plans to obtain a building permit by the end of 2026.

Once the Jaworzno plant is operational, which is planned for the second half of 2029, annual production of renewable hydrogen is estimated at approximately 1,800-2,200 tons. This volume is equivalent to the annual demand of up to 250 hydrogen-powered buses or trucks, demonstrating the scale of the project and its potential significance for the development of zero-emission transport in southern Poland.

TAURON H2 focuses on building competences, partnerships and projects that can contribute to the development of the hydrogen economy in Poland and support the achievement of goals related to energy transformation and climate neutrality.
