South Africa has unveiled six green hydrogen and Power-to-X projects as the country seeks to build a pipeline of investment-ready developments in the emerging hydrogen economy.
The projects were announced at the Africa Green Hydrogen Summit alongside the launch of South Africa’s first Green Hydrogen Deal Book, which provides an overview of projects at different stages of development for potential investors, financiers and technology partners.
Six projects announced
- Coega Green Ammonia Project
- Saldanha Hydrogen Direct Reduced Iron Project
- Phelan Green Group’s Project Saldanha
- Prieska Power Reserve Project
- Green e-Fuels Producers
- Green Hydrogen Solutions
The projects span areas including sustainable fuels, industrial decarbonisation, green manufacturing and energy transition applications.
The first wave comprises projects that have participated in the government-supported Power-to-X Project Development Standard, a framework intended to improve project preparation and transparency and assess investment readiness.
The Green Hydrogen Deal Book was developed through the GH₂ Programme of the Just Energy Transition Investment Plan and is intended to provide a consolidated view of South Africa’s emerging green hydrogen project pipeline.
Trade, Industry and Competition Minister Parks Tau said the projects could support industrial development, localisation and export growth, while Electricity and Energy Minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa said the initiative was aimed at connecting projects with investors and other strategic partners.
The Industrial Development Corporation has also been involved in project preparation, investment mobilisation and technical support for the sector.
Further projects are expected to enter the pipeline as they progress through the Power-to-X Project Development Standard process.
