Uttar Pradesh has strengthened its cooperation with Japan’s Yamanashi Prefecture to promote the development of green hydrogen and clean energy technologies in the state. The partnership gained momentum during the UP–Japan Investment Meet 2026 held in Lucknow on Thursday, where officials and industry representatives discussed opportunities in green hydrogen production, technology, research and investment.
A major outcome of the meeting was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for a pilot green hydrogen project in Uttar Pradesh. The project will receive technical support and expertise from Yamanashi Prefecture. The agreement was signed in the presence of Uttar Pradesh Energy Minister A.K. Sharma and Kotaro Nagasaki, Governor of Yamanashi Prefecture.
Speaking at the event, Sharma said green hydrogen would play an important role in building a clean and sustainable energy economy. He highlighted the potential of green hydrogen to reduce dependence on conventional fossil fuels, support the development of clean technologies and help industries reduce carbon emissions.
Yamanashi Prefecture has significant experience in hydrogen production, storage technologies and fuel cell research. Its expertise is expected to support Uttar Pradesh in developing suitable technologies and solutions for the state’s energy requirements.
The collaboration is also expected to strengthen technology transfer and research cooperation between India and Japan. The pilot project could provide a foundation for larger green hydrogen initiatives in Uttar Pradesh and encourage greater participation from private companies and investors.
The partnership is expected to create new opportunities for domestic and international investment in clean energy infrastructure. It also highlights Uttar Pradesh’s efforts to develop a low-carbon industrial ecosystem and establish itself as an emerging destination for green technology and sustainable energy projects.
