US start-up Aternium has secured a site for its planned 60MW green hydrogen and deuterium facility in Dover, Delaware.
With construction planned for 2027, the project could qualify for the lucrative 45V clean hydrogen production tax credit. Offering up to $3 per kilogramme of hydrogen, the incentive requires projects to begin construction before 2028 to be eligible.
Aternium expects the “definitive” sale agreement for the site at the Garrison Oak Technical Park to close later this year.
The project would produce both green hydrogen and deuterium. Also known as heavy water, deuterium occurs naturally in trace amounts, but can be produced through electrolysis, which leaves the isotope behind in the remaining water.
It can be used in advanced technologies, including nuclear fusion, semiconductor manufacturing, microchip fabrication, fibre-optic production, and pharmaceutical development.
The firm claims it could draw more than $226m investment to the Dover area.
Kiewit has been contracted to deliver pre-front-end engineering design (FEED), and Siemens Energy for FEED. CH-IV has also been appointed Owner’s Engineers.
Production capacities of both deuterium and green hydrogen have not yet been disclosed, nor have offtakers or potential end-use sectors been identified. H2 View has reached out for information.
