PosHYdon: First Offshore Green Hydrogen Production on Active Platform in North Sea - News and Statistics

The PosHYdon initiative, recognized as the world’s first endeavor to merge offshore wind energy, hydrogen generation, and natural gas extraction at sea, has begun producing green hydrogen on a working offshore platform in the North Sea. The Q13a-A platform, under the operation of Eni Energy Netherlands, is situated about 13 kilometers from the coast of Scheveningen and holds the distinction of being the initial fully electrified production platform in the Dutch portion of the North Sea.

On this platform, seawater is turned into demineralized water, which is subsequently changed into hydrogen via electrolysis. The power required for this procedure comes from offshore wind energy. The pilot’s goal is to obtain real-world experience in merging various energy systems offshore and in creating hydrogen in a marine environment. The project also examines how effectively an electrolyser functions when fueled by the fluctuating output of wind energy. Furthermore, insights are being gathered about the expenses, upkeep needs, and operational efficiency of offshore hydrogen systems.

Throughout the testing phase, green hydrogen is being generated with the primary aim of reaching stable system operation. Subsequent tests will focus on the system’s ability to adapt to variations in offshore wind power generation. Important results will be examined and assembled in August and September, with the findings to be disclosed in the autumn.

PosHYdon is a collaborative effort involving DEME, EBN, Eneco, Emerson, Gasunie, Hatenboerwater, Investa Expertise Centrum, IV Offshore & Energy, Nel Hydrogen, Eni, Nexstep, NGT, Nogat, TAQA, and TNO, backed by the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Policy. Lex de Groot, Managing Director of Eni Energy Netherlands and Vice-President of Element NL, stated that it is impressive to see that, in partnership with all these public and private entities, a global first has been accomplished through PosHYdon. He noted that repurposing existing offshore platforms for sustainable uses is now turning into a concrete reality, and that collectively, a significant advance is being made toward a future offshore energy system in the North Sea.
