HyWaves has released a lifecycle assessment, conducted with a major hydrogen Tier 1 supplier, showing that its H2Top system provides the most economical green hydrogen for solar-driven electrolysis. The study modeled the financial advantages of the company’s technology on an actual project.

Comparative Analysis of Power Configurations

The evaluation examined three distinct power setups for a 5 MW solar-powered alkaline electrolysis facility. It determined that HyWaves’ H2Top DC-native power management approach yields the minimal hydrogen production expense while simultaneously lowering initial capital outlay.

Direct-Current Architecture Minimizes Inefficiencies

Solar panels inherently generate direct current, and electrolyzers function on DC power. Traditional hydrogen facilities unnecessarily transform this electricity between DC and alternating current multiple times prior to reaching the electrolyzer. Each conversion phase adds extra hardware, energy waste, upkeep demands, and replacement expenses over the project’s lifespan. H2Top adopts a fundamentally distinct method by establishing a DC-native framework that conveys power straight from the solar array to the electrolyzer, removing most of the standard power electronics found in conventional AC-linked systems.

Financial Savings and Performance Improvements

In a specific scenario utilizing information from the hydrogen Tier 1 supplier, a 27% decrease in levelized hydrogen cost was observed. This equates to a 27.3% reduction in hydrogen production expense relative to a standard AC configuration, plus an extra 10% enhancement over a centralized DC-DC solution. Even with the addition of extra bipolar current collectors inside the electrolyzer stack, H2Top attained the minimal overall installed capital expenditure because it eliminates much of the expensive AC power conversion gear, related switchgear, wiring, and installation tasks. For the 5 MW reference facility, this yields an upfront capital savings exceeding PS840,000 compared to a conventional AC-linked design.

Operational and Efficiency Advantages

The advantages extend past the original setup by lowering maintenance costs and facility idle time. Conventional AC systems necessitate replacing a complete set of string inverters, while centralized DC-DC systems require replacing the main converter during the plant’s 25-year operational period. The H2Top framework only needs replacement of inexpensive switching parts that can be swapped out while the system runs without any interruption. The assessment modeled the standard AC architecture using typical rectifier and inverter efficiencies, leading to roughly 11.7% electrical losses before power reaches the electrolyzer. These assumptions closely match HyWaves’ actual field trials, where H2Top showed about 15% greater overall system performance compared to an equivalent AC-linked system under fluctuating solar conditions.

Robust Economic Viability

A sensitivity analysis indicated that project finances are mainly influenced by capital expense and solar energy generation, with H2Top preserving the minimal levelized hydrogen cost across various assumptions. Even in conservative deterioration scenarios, H2Top stayed more economical than both alternative configurations examined in the study. The company noted that as green hydrogen initiatives expand in size, decreasing system intricacy becomes equally crucial as enhancing component efficiency. By eliminating unnecessary power conversion phases, cutting installed capital expenditure, lowering upkeep needs, and boosting overall system efficiency, H2Top allows developers to generate renewable hydrogen at a notably reduced expense.
