Germany’s proposed electricity network charging reforms would increase the cost of producing green hydrogen by far less than industry groups have warned, according to new analysis by the University of Cologne’s Energy Economics Institute (EWI).
The report comes as the Federal Network Agency (BNetzA) mulls expanding the General Network Charges System for Electricity (AgNes) to include power producers, batteries, and electrolysers, which currently do not pay network charges.
The reforms could see electricity generators pay between €4 ($4.57) and €7 ($8) per kilowatt per year for feeding power into the grid.
BNetzA claimed the country’s network tariff system was no longer fit for purpose, and it aimed to support flexibility and reduce network expansion through the reforms.
