China ready to share hydrogen expertise with Sarawak, says ambassador

KUCHING (June 9): China is ready to share its experience in large-scale hydrogen development with Sarawak as both sides explore broader cooperation across the green hydrogen value chain, said China’s Ambassador to Malaysia Ouyang Yujing.
He said China’s comprehensive hydrogen industry chain, strong manufacturing capabilities and extensive deployment experience could complement Sarawak’s abundant hydropower, solar and biomass resources.
“China is willing to share its experiences in hydrogen industry development with other countries based on the principles of extensive consultation, joint contribution and shared benefits,” he said.
His speech was delivered by Chinese Consul General in Kuching Xing Weiping during the Asia Pacific Green Hydrogen Conference and Exhibition (APGH) 2026 at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK).
Ouyang also commended the Sarawak 2030 Sustainability Blueprint, noting that the state possesses favourable conditions to develop large-scale low-carbon fuels such as green hydrogen, green ammonia and green methanol.
He identified several areas with strong potential for bilateral collaboration, including green hydrogen production and international trade, green fuel substitution in shipping and ports, the construction of cross-border logistics hydrogen corridors, industrial decarbonisation, the alignment of technical standards and infrastructure connectivity.
He said,
China and Sarawak can make full use of complementary advantages to further cooperation,
Highlighting China’s domestic milestones, Xing said the country’s hydrogen industry received a major boost following the enactment of its Energy Law in 2025, which formally incorporated hydrogen development into the national legal framework.
He revealed that China’s annual hydrogen production has exceeded 39 million tonnes, making it the world’s largest producer and consumer of hydrogen.
The country’s electrolyser equipment is also being exported to more than 30 countries and regions.
Under China’s current 15th Five-Year Plan, he said, efforts are focused on upgrading renewable energy-based production equipment while advancing large-scale hydrogen storage and transportation technologies.
Xing added that China is actively expanding its green hydrogen value chain into green ammonia, green methanol, and sustainable aviation fuels (SAF), while broadening applications across the transportation, industrial and power sectors.
He said closer collaboration between China and Sarawak could drive industrial growth while enhancing regional energy security amid global uncertainties, including geopolitical tensions affecting energy markets.
He added,
By jointly turning our region into a green area of the hydrogen ecosystem, which provides safer, cleaner, and sustainable development to all, we will enable an early achievement of global carbon neutrality,
