EU plans early review of RFNBO hydrogen rules, leak shows | Policy

The European Commission is preparing to bring forward a review of its controversial green hydrogen rules by two years, according to a leaked communication.

It comes after increasing calls from industry lobby groups and key member states for the EU to relax its renewable fuels of non-biological origin (RFNBO) rules.

The leaked “AccelerateEU – Energy Union” communication, shared by Paris-based policy news outlet Contexte, shows the Commission plans to propose a “targeted review of the production criteria for renewable hydrogen” in June this year.

This would come two years earlier than the originally planned review period in 2028, signalling a rollback from Brussels amid mounting pressure from the sector.
