Pertamina Geothermal Energy is looking to expand beyond its geothermal power business into data centres and hydrogen fuel cell generator leasing.

PT Pertamina Geothermal Energy (PGEO) has indicated plans of expanding beyond their core geothermal power generation business. Current plans include synergizing with off-grid businesses or derivative industries such as data centers and production of green hydrogen and green ammonia. The company is also looking into operating a hydrogen fuel cell-based generator rental service business.

The company had previously signed a collaboration with the Indonesia Data Center Provider Organization (IDPRO) and the University of Indonesia to create a development roadmap for geothermal-powered green data centers. Following the recent Annual General Meeting of Stakeholders, PGEO has announced the addition of a data center unit under the Director of Operations, as well plans to build a 5-MW geothermal power plant in the Kamojang field in West Java to support data center operations.

“This is PGEO’s new business activity and makes the company a pioneer in developing the first green data center in Indonesia that uses renewable energy in the form of geothermal energy,” according to a company statement.

Another diversification venture being explored is a hydrogen fuel cell generator (HFCG) rental business.  The proposed business scope will cover the provision, installation, operation, maintenance, and technical support of generators. This technology offers a hydrogen-based power generation solution that is efficient and environmentally friendly. Although there are similar efforts in Indonesia, the hydrogen generator industry is still in its infancy and mostly has not progressed beyond pilot projects.

The company targets initial deployment of the industry in the group’s internal ecosystem, including support for the green terminal project. It also presents an opportunity for PGEO to collaborate with other entities in the Pertamina group.

According to a prior announcement, PGEO has designated an independent assessor to evaluate the feasibility of the HFCG rental business. The results of this will then be the basis for the decision to be made during the company’s General Assembly.
