Samsung C&T Completes Off-Grid Green Hydrogen Facility in Gimcheon

According to Hydrogen Central, Samsung C&T’s Engineering & Construction Group has finished building South Korea’s first off-grid green hydrogen production plant. The facility is situated in Gimcheon and operates solely on solar power, requiring no external electricity supply.

The project uses an 8.3-megawatt solar array to power a 10-megawatt water electrolysis system. This setup can generate around 0.6 tons of green hydrogen daily, which translates to over 230 tons per year. The output is intended for local hydrogen infrastructure, such as vehicle fueling stations.

Samsung C&T handled the entire engineering, procurement, and construction process for the solar panels, electrolyzers, and hydrogen storage systems. The company also intends to manage the facility’s ongoing operations and maintenance. Officials from the national and regional governments attended a ceremony marking the project’s completion.

The company views this project as a foundational step for larger domestic and international green hydrogen initiatives. It plans to use the experience to pursue overseas projects and to support the domestic development of related technologies. Samsung C&T’s strategy identifies green hydrogen and ammonia as central components of its future eco-friendly energy business, with active projects in several global regions.
