Protium And ULEMCo Team Up For HGV Hydrogen

The pair have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the aim of accelerating the use of ‘zero-carbon hydrogen fuel for heavy-duty vehicles and non-road mobile machinery’. The immediate focus of the collaboration will be South England and Wales, where Protium’s hydrogen production facilities are located.

“This MOU marks a major step forward in building a clean, hydrogen-powered transport ecosystem for Wales and South England,” said Jon Constable, COO at Protium.

“Our green hydrogen will help decarbonise transport, support local industry, and contribute to net zero goals.”

Founded in 2014, ULEMCo specialises in converting heavy duty vehicles to hydrogen power using combustion and fuel cell technologies. The company believes hydrogen is the best solution to decarbonise the nearly half a million heavy duty trucks on the road in the UK, with electrification not practical for the energy demands of the sector. As well as LGV and HGV, ULEMCo has also worked on specialist utility vehicles including refuse trucks, gritters and sweepers.

Protium is one of the UK’s leading producers of green hydrogen, with an ambition to develop 1GW of green hydrogen production assets in the UK by 2030. Its Pioneer 1 facility has been supplying hydrogen to transport trials and other users since coming online in 2023. A second facility in Wales, Pioneer 2, is due to begin operations soon, having originally been slated to open in 2024.

The new partnership will see Protium and ULEMCo jointly exploring the rollout of green hydrogen to local transport operators and depots, demonstrating hydrogen mobility in real-world environments, and engaging with government bodies to support wider hydrogen adoption and infrastructure rollout.

“Hydrogen is essential for decarbonising sectors where electrification is not practical,” said Jordon Cullen, commercial manager at ULEMCo.

“We are excited to be collaborating with Protium to deliver achievable and affordable solutions, helping our customers decarbonise now. This partnership demonstrates our commitment to supporting a clean energy transition across the UK.”
