Worley to design Nordic Region’s first liquid green hydrogen plant in Norway

Australia-based engineering firm Worley Ltd has been selected to carry out the initial design work for what is expected to be the Nordic region’s first liquid green hydrogen production facility, Renewables Now reported.

The project, led by Norwegian Hydrogen AS, will be developed in Rjukan and is planned as a 25-megawatt plant aimed at producing clean fuel for industrial and shipping use.

Under the agreement, Worley will undertake front-end engineering and design work, which also gives it an exclusive option to handle the full construction phase. Its local unit, Worley Rosenberg, will prepare a detailed execution plan, with the construction phase expected to begin in the second half of 2026.

The project, known as RjukanLH2, will use modular technologies, including advanced electrolyser systems and a hydrogen liquefaction unit. It is designed to produce up to 10 tonnes of liquid hydrogen per day, with scope for future expansion.

The plant will run on renewable electricity sourced locally through an agreement with Tinn Energi, ensuring low-emission production.

Logistics company Samskip has already signed on as a customer for the hydrogen, with more buyers expected to join. The facility is targeted to begin supplying fuel by 2028.

The project has also secured financial backing from the European Union Innovation Fund, the EU Hydrogen Bank and Innovation Norway, highlighting strong support for clean energy development in the region.
