Woodside targets hydrogen production at Perth refuelling project this year | Hydrogen


Australian energy firm Woodside expects to begin hydrogen production at its refuelling development in Perth during the second half of 2026.

In its Q2 results, where it reported $4.18bn in revenues, the company confirmed leak testing and cold commissioning for its hydrogen refueller at its H2Perth project had been completed.

The project in Rockingham, Western Australia, is installing a 2.6MW electrolyser to produce up to 235kg of hydrogen per day that will supply an on-site refuelling station.

Woodside plans to scale production to 1,000kg per day, which could absorb the majority of the electrolyser’s capacity. The site will use electricity from the grid through renewable energy certificates.

The company said commissioning activities are continuing on the site, with start-up targeted for Q3 2026, with hydrogen production expected around the same time.

The refuelling development was originally pitched as an adjunct to Woodside’s much larger H2Perth hydrogen export project. The proposed commercial-scale development, which remains under technical design, would initially produce up to 30,000 tonnes of liquid hydrogen a year.

Woodside had signed a conditional offtake agreement for undisclosed volumes from H2Perth with Singapore’s Keppel to supply data centres from as early as 2030.

The update comes after the company cancelled its planned 60-tonne-per-day green hydrogen project in Oklahoma, US, due to cost and lower-than-expected demand.

It has also been facing delays in the start-up of blue hydrogen supply for its recently acquired Beaumont New Ammonia facility in Texas, after stating uptake of lower carbon ammonia was slower than forecast.

In the Q2 results, the company reaffirmed plans to start blue ammonia production in 2027, subject to industrial gas firm Linde commissioning facilities and ExxonMobil starting up carbon capture infrastructure.
