Uttar Pradesh has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Japan’s Yamanashi Prefecture to strengthen economic and technological cooperation. The agreement was finalized during a meeting between state officials and Governor Kotaro Nagasaki. The partnership will focus on green hydrogen, clean energy, industry, tourism, and vocational education.
One of the main highlights of the MoU is cooperation in green hydrogen and technology exchange. This move supports India’s broader goal of achieving energy independence and promoting sustainable development. As part of this plan, IIT Kanpur is being developed as a Centre of Excellence in Green Hydrogen. The institute is expected to play an important role in research, innovation, and the practical use of clean energy solutions in industries.
The agreement also lays out plans for industrial development. A Japanese Industrial Township is proposed to be set up in the region of the Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority (YEIDA). This township is expected to attract Japanese companies, encourage investment, and support technology transfer. The initiative aims to create new job opportunities and boost manufacturing in the state.
Tourism and cultural exchange are also part of the partnership. Both sides have agreed to promote people-to-people connections and increase tourism activities between Uttar Pradesh and Yamanashi.
Skill development is another key focus area. Vocational education programs will be introduced to prepare the local workforce for new and emerging industries. Governor Nagasaki has also proposed leading a delegation of 200 CEOs to Uttar Pradesh in August 2026 to explore business opportunities.
To support Japanese investors, Invest UP will offer dedicated assistance through its Japan Desk. The MoU marks an important step in positioning Uttar Pradesh as a preferred destination for global investment and sustainable growth.
