The first deputy prime minister of Ukraine and Minister of Energy Denys Shmyhal, together with Austria’s federal minister of economy, energy and tourism Wolfgang Gattmannsdorfer, signed a memorandum on active cooperation in the field of hydrogen technologies.
The Ministry of Energy of Ukraine reported on this event, citing information from Ukrinform.
“According to Denys Shmyhal, the document provides for the development of production, the creation of infrastructure for storage and transportation of hydrogen, as well as attracting investments in this area,”
In addition, the parties discussed other bilateral agreements – in particular, regarding the production of energy equipment to restore Ukraine’s energy sector.
Shmyhal stressed that Ukrainian and Austrian businesses have already established close cooperation across various sectors of energy. Austrian companies are already involved in gas storage in Ukraine’s storage facilities, and are also discussing expanding cooperation in Ukraine’s underground gas storage facilities as well as joint gas-production projects.
It is also known that LLC “Operator of the Gas Transmission System of Ukraine” is considering the possibility of creating the first hydrogen energy facility based on one of the international interconnectors with subsequent deployment of the infrastructure across the Carpathians.
Also among the discussed directions is Austria’s participation in projects for rebuilding energy and road infrastructure.
In January 2025, OGTSU together with several key organizations and companies signed a memorandum of understanding regarding the creation and support of the implementation of the “Hydrogen Corridor Ukraine – EU”.
Prospects for Hydrogen Cooperation
It is expected that further cooperation will boost hydrogen production and the development of infrastructure for its storage and transportation, opening new opportunities for energy cooperation between Ukraine and Austria. Together they will work on technological solutions and financing for the sustainable development of the hydrogen economy.
