Trinasolar to supply modules for New South Wales green hydrogen project


Chinese solar manufacturer Trinasolar has been selected to supply photovoltaic (PV) modules for the solar expansion of the Good Earth Green Hydrogen and Ammonia (GEGHA) project in New South Wales, which is set to become the state’s first green hydrogen and ammonia production facility.

The GEGHA project, located near Moree, is being developed by Australian farming company Sundown Pastoral Company and New Zealand-based Hiringa Energy. The project reached financial close in July last year and received an additional A$9.4 million in funding from the New South Wales government earlier this year, with construction beginning in May, Renew Economy reported.

The project will feature 36 MW of solar generation capacity, comprising the existing 9 MW Wathagar solar farm and a 27 MW expansion, supported by a 41 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS).

The renewable energy generated by the solar facility will power a 15 MW electrolyser that will produce green hydrogen using locally sourced water. The hydrogen will then be used in a plant capable of producing 16 tonnes of green ammonia per day by combining hydrogen with nitrogen extracted from the air.

The project also includes 600 tonnes of ammonia storage capacity and 3 tonnes of hydrogen storage.

Trinasolar will supply its 510-watt and 515-watt Vertex S+ solar modules for the 27 MW solar expansion. The modules use n-type i-TOPCon technology and a dual-glass design intended to improve durability, weather resistance and long-term performance.

Construction of the solar farm expansion is already underway.

“Projects like GEGHA demonstrate the important role solar plays in enabling emerging industries such as green hydrogen and low-carbon fertiliser production,” said Edison Zhou, Head of Australia and New Zealand at Trinasolar.

The GEGHA project is expected to support the development of Australia’s green hydrogen industry while producing low-carbon ammonia for use in agriculture and other industrial applications.
